The Executive Director of A Christian Ministry in the National Parks will report directly to the ACMNP Board of Trustees and will work closely with the ACMNP national office staff and all of ACMNP's constituencies. Primary roles and responsibilities will include:
- Articulate the ACMNP vision. The Executive Director must serve as “keeper of the ACMNP vision,” clarifying and articulating the vision and scope of ACMNP's ministry to all current constituents and future partners in the work and funding of ACMNP. A Christian Ministry in the National Parks stands alone with its unique call to develop Christian leaders through worship and witness in our national parks.
- Recruit, hire, and supervise all national office staff. The national office staff are involved in the recruitment, selection, training, communication, support, and evaluation of the students and seminarians who serve as ACMNP ministry staff. In addition, the national staff processes and records donations, engages purposely in financial development activities, maintains communication with ACMNP board members, alumni, Ministry Support Committees (MSCs) and other friends of ACMNP, and conducts the day-to-day business activities of the ministry.
- Develop the financial resource engine for ACMNP's ministry. While the national office staff includes a development person, the Executive Director must articulate and implement a long-term plan to fund the current needs and future growth of ACMNP's ministry.
- Oversee the recruitment of students and seminarians for ACMNP's park ministry staff. Changing economics, culture, and even school calendars are making this a challenging task year in and out. New plans and some out-of-the-box thinking are needed to recruit strong candidates for ACMNP's park ministry staff.
- Nurture good relations with ACMNP's key constituents. The flip side of the complexity of relating to such a wide spectrum of constituents is that an amazing breadth of experience and resources is accessible. The following are a few of ACMNP's key constituents:
- Annual group of ~225 students and seminarians serving with ACMNP in the parks
- ACMNP's National Advisory Board
- ACMNP alumni
- National Park Service personnel
- Park concessionaires
- Ministry Support Committee members
- Major donors and foundations
- Seminary leadership
The next Executive Director of A Christian Ministry in the National Parks must understand the dynamics and tensions that are part and parcel of conducting Christian ministry openly in the context of our country's national parks. It is vital to balance the service and value that ACMNP brings to the visitors and working communities in our national parks with protecting our constitutional right to be present as a ministry. In a similar way, the next Executive Director must understand and be sensitive to Native American history and experiences in regions surrounding our national parks.
Candidates should have a high energy level, excellent health, and a readiness to take on a significant challenge. His or her family situation should be supportive enough to allow for meeting the demands of this position while retaining a healthy family rhythm and quality of life.
