2017-2018 Winter Jobs and Ministry Now Available

Friday, June 23, 2017

This summer may be only half-way over, but our minds are already filled with thoughts of fall and winter!  Turquoise sea, pristine beaches, canyons, sand dunes, rocky basins, salt flats, cacti… wait, huh?

Yep, you read that right.   Seasonal winter placements with A Christian Ministry in the National Parks are a bit unconventional, considering they’re located in the desert mountains and the Caribbean.  We like to think that ministry can be a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!

Hanging out with coworkers in St. John, Virgin Islands National Park.

So what does winter ministry with ACMNP look like?  In a lot of ways, just like summer ministry.  You’ll move into a national park neighborhood and help people encounter God through the wonders of creation.  Practically speaking, that means leading interdenominational outdoor services of worship each Sunday as an outreach to campground and lodge guests, employees, and national park residents. It means being employed full time by private park concession companies, working hospitality jobs like front desk, food service, retail, or housekeeping.  It means living with co-workers in employee housing and engaging with your team in relational ministry that shows people the unconditional love of Christ.  It means working through team differences, becoming a leader, cultivating the heart of a servant, exploring issues of faith and the environment, taking initiative to grow in your walk with God, and hiking outside that ever-expanding comfort zone.

But winter placements with ACMNP are a bit different too.  For one thing, there’s less of them.  This year, we’re looking for team members to serve in five winter locations: Big Bend (TX), Death Valley (CA), Everglades (FL), Yosemite (CA) and St. John (USVI).  These places aren’t exactly booming metropolises (they’re national parks after all), so you need to be OK with living in a place several hours from towns.  The average team size is a bit smaller too, so it’s really important that you’re self-motivated, flexible, and able to initiate ministry activities with little supervision.  Finally, winter placements are longer than just 90 days.  We’re looking for young people who can work and serve for 6-7 months, from October/November through late April or early May.

Here's some more information on the winter opportunities available.

Big Bend National Park, TXGreat opportunity for Spanish speakers who want to ‘be the church’ in a very remote, beautiful place with no other churches nearby.

Death Valley National Park, CA:  Ideal for those wishing to explore the outdoors and deeply invest in the ‘cultural melting pot’ of the employee community.

Virgin Islands National Park, USVI (St. John)Cross-cultural experience and ministry outreach to local West Indies and international tourists on the Caribbean island of St. John.

NEW LOCATIONS FOR WINTER 17-18!

Yosemite National Park, California: Pack your winter clothes as this location (formerly only available in the summer season) will have you helping guests get out and on the mountain to ski at Badger Pass within Yosemite National Park! Ideal for candidates with slightly shorter dates of availability (Dec-April) who are excited about the idea of starting a new ministry location on a smaller team.

Everglades National Park, Florida: Ideal for team members who are interested in exploring the southern tip of Florida (near Miami, Florida Keys, Biscayne NP, and alligator and swamp country!) This will be a smaller team and employer, but you'll have the opportunity to explore the vast expanse of this diverse park with it sitting just in your backyard! This location November-March)
